Signed first edition, review copy, of Smith's National Book Award-winning memoir of her intimate friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe â inscribed to the longtime Strand Bookstore rare book room manager Craig Anderson. And she found steady work at bookshops, including Scribner's, the Gotham Book Mart, and at The Strand â additionally supplementing her income by scouting rare books. Her relationship with Anderson began in the late 1960s, and her relationship to The Strand in particular was important. It was there she gave a rooftop reading to celebrate the release of her first collection of poems, SEVENTH HEAVEN.
