The novel concerns the use of sabotage to protest environmentally damaging activities in the Southwestern United States, and was so influential that the term "monkeywrench," . . . , has come to mean, besides sabotage and damage to machines, any sabotage, activism, law-making, or law-breaking to preserve wilderness, wild spaces and ecosystems. This copy is a true 1st American edition, 1st printing of the work published by Lippincott in 1975. The original dust jacket is protected from further wear by a Brodart sleeve. ******************************************************************************************************************* "Ex-Green Beret George Hayduke returns from war to find his beloved southwestern desert threatened by industrial development. Joining with Bronx exile and feminist saboteur Bonnie Abzug, wilderness guide and outcast Mormon Seldom Seen Smith, and libertarian billboard torcher Doc Sarvis, M.D., Hayduke is ready to fight the power. They (the Monkey Wrench Gang) take on the strip miners, clear-cutters, and the highway, dam, and bridge builders who are threatening the natural habitat in this is a comedic novel of destructive mayhem and outrageous civil disobedience." //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Edward Paul Abbey (January 29, 1927 - March 14, 1989) was an American author and essayist noted for his advocacy of environmental issues, criticism of public land policies, and anarchist political views. His best-known works include the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which has been cited as an inspiration by radical environmental groups, and the non-fiction work Desert Solitaire. . . . Regarding his writing style, Abbey states: "I write in a deliberately provocative and outrageous manner because I like to startle people. I hope to wake up people. I have no desire to simply soothe or please. I would rather risk making people angry than putting them to sleep. And I try to write in a style that's entertaining as well as provocative. It's hard for me to stay serious for more than half a page at a time." Abbey felt that it was the duty of all authors to "speak the truth--especially unpopular truth. Especially truth that offends the powerful, the rich, the well-established, the traditional, the mythic". The above text was taken from, respectively, RosettaBooks publishing (via Google Books) and Wikipedia. [Abbey, Edward. The monkey wrench gang. United States: Dream Garden Press, 1985.]

Very good first American edition, first printing in very good dust jacket. Book is fine except for buckling to one corner of the rear boards and affecting about 100 pages. Maybe it was dropped. Red and black pencil mark to top of text block. The price clipped dj has general wear and soil, some creasing, closed tears, a missing piece affecting the 'H' in 'THE' on the front and a 1 x 1cm missing piece on the back of the dj. Signed by Abbey: signature obtained by me.
