Schwarzkopf led Operation Desert Storm, which consisted of an extended air campaign and later ground forces who successfully liberated Kuwait in a 100-hour offensive. In retirement he received the Distinguished Service Medal from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, the only person to hold this honor from all four branches.
