Scholastic Press, 1998. Hard cover. Very good/Good. Early US printing. Book itself has all the signs of being a first printing, but the jacket is from a later printing, possibly a book club edition. Jacket is lightly worn along edges with a half inch tear from top corner of jacket back cover. Very small stain over "P" on jacket front cover, not affecing legibility. Spine is lightly bumped, but binding is tight. Inside is clean and unmarked.

In Very Good minus condition with a Very Good condition dust jacket. Multicolored purple, tan and dark green spine with gold gilt lettering. Dust jacket is wrapped in a mylar covering, price uncut "$17.95", has mild wear along the edges, mild age toning along the head edge of the rear flap, and creasing along the fore corner flaps. Boards are slightly warped, has mild bending along the spine head and tail and the tail fore corners, mild age toning and wear along the head and tail edges. Textblock has a light smudge on page 197, pen signature from previous owner on the front end-page, light foxing along the head edge, and light stains on the fore edges. Signed flat by the illustrator Mary GrandPré on the title page. Shelved in Room C. 1393032. Special Collections.

A very early printing which does NOT have the number "1" on either the HB or DJ. It is in NearFine/Fine condition and looks unread. There is no color fading, marks, stains, etc. There is one .5 cm bump on the lower front and a 1 mm bump on the upper front corners. The DJ is not price clipped ( $ 16.95) with no real wear. Below the number line is 'Printed in the U.S.A. 23', and below that is 'First American edition, October 1998.' Boards are purple with an embossed diamond pattern, and a red cloth spine. The dust jacket has a $16.95 price on the upper corner of the front flap. The dust jacket back has a cream/light yellow bar code field with two bar codes in it, and the smaller bar code says '51695'. The dust jacket back also has a single quote from the Guardian saying 'Harry Potter could assume the near-legendary status of Ronald Dahl's Charlie, of chocolate factory fame.' Later issue dust jackets have a substitute quote from Publishers Weekly. The top spine of both the book and the dust jacket lists 'J.K. ROWLING' and lacks the 'YEAR 1' badge, and the gold lettering is raised on the spine of the dust jacket. Also includes as a bonus a True American First Edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The copyright page has the full number line '10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 9/9 0/0 1 2 3 4'. Below the number line is 'Printed in the U.S.A. 37', and below that is 'First American edition, June 1999.' Boards are blue with an embossed diamond pattern, and a green cloth spine. The dust jacket has $17.95 price on the upper corner of the front flap. The dust jacket back has a diagonal bar code field on the left side, and the small bar code within has the number '51795'. The spine on both the book and dust jacket lack the YEAR 2 badge that was introduced later, and silver lettering is raised on the spine of the dust jacket. This book, however, has a water damaged dust jacket visible on the inside of the jacket only. Some of the blue and green has run on the jacket. The bottom of the book also has some water damage.
