Atlantic Monthly Press, New York, 1997. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. Stated "First Edition", first printing, with a full number line starting with "1"; first state, with "man-woman" instead of "mad-woman" on p. 25, line 16; scarce signed in this first state. 9-1/4" tall, 356 numbered pages; dark navy blue lightly cross-hatched boards with black cloth quarter binding, reddish-gold lettering on spine only; 7/8" tall "A", symbol of publisher, in lower right corner of front board; end pages have red-on-gray 2-page "Map of the Southern Blue Ridge Mountains". Book is square, hinges tight, very slight bumping of lower corners and head of spine. Jacket is clean and crisp, with John Berendt's blurb on 2-1/8" circular silver sticker (not exactly an issue point, as some copies had this affixed on publication day, while others didn't); it is intact with the original price of "$24" on the top corner of the front flap; it has shelf rubs where boards and quarter binding overlap, light bumps to lower corners and edges, very slight wrinkling to spine ends. Signed by author in medium black felt tip pen on title page beneath his printed name ("The signature is not very legible; however I know that it is authentic since I stood in the [long] line for it"--Gail Waller, owner, Cagel Books). No other discernible or objectionable faults on book or jacket such as marks or writing within, stains, tears, chips, or other damage that would diminish its appearance. No remainder mark, no previous owner markings or inscriptions, not price clipped, not a book club edition, not a former library book. Author's first book. Winner of the 1997 National Book Award for Fiction and the 1997 Nelson Algren Award for Fiction. After a modest 25,000 copy first printing, the book went into dozens of additional printings, eventually selling more than a million copies in hardcover and winning the National Book Award -- a rare combination of literary and commercial success for any work of fiction, let alone a first novel.
