Issued in conjunction with 1988-1990 exhibitions of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989), who passed away during the run. With essays by Janet Kardon, Kay Larson, David Joselit and Patti Smith, complemented by dramatic, full-page photos. Contents is clean and bright, free from any defects. Binding is square and tight. Features deep red end papers surrounding high quality paper. Fo both ext and photos. White wraps feature tow of Mapplethorpe's G rated images as cover art. Wraps show soem spotting, soiling and routine shelf wear consistent with age. Would rate the contents as fine downgrade overall to very Good base on wraps. The contents note the location of this traveling exhibition including at the Corcoran Gallery with an asterisk noting that the Corcoran cancelled its show just 18 days before the exhibit was to open. This lead to widespread protests among artists, the projection on the Corcoran's exterior walls of some of Mapplethorpe's works, and eventually to the resignation of the Director of the Corcoran.

Book is NEW and UNREAD but front cover, front endpaper, and first two pages have a quarter inch tear at the bottom right corner.

The cover is shelf worn and slightly rubbed. Binding is secure and inside is clean and unmarked.
