Hardback book in a protected jacket, price intact, binding straight, pages clean and unmarked. first edition, first printing, Oprah Book sticker on the cover. There are some light pencil marks in the margins of a few pages. This novel became very controversial when it was published because of the issue of "cultural appropriation." Because the author was not Mexican it was asserted that she should not have written about Mexican and Central American migration to the border and the multiple dangers they face. In truth, any good novelist "appropriates" other people and cultures, that is what novelists do--create characters who are not like themselves. The issue not whether such appropriation should be done or not, it should, but whether the novelist is gifted at his or her craft and creates credible characters and speaks with authority about their chosen topic. In the case of Jeanine Cummins, the answer is so-so. She's not a particularly gifted novelist and her authority on her topic varies from credible to not so much. It's a book that deserves some readers, but not the high praise or excessive condemnation it received.
