Jean Marc Bourgery (1797-1849), Chirurg und Anatom, studierte Medizin in Paris bei Laennec und Duyputren, gewann verschiedene Goldmedaillen für seine herausragenden Leistungen an der Pariser Fakultät für Medizin und publizierte in einem Zeitraum von zwanzig Jahren einen achtbändigen Anatomie-Atlas in folio (430 x 320 mm), der zu den umfassendsten und prächtigsten Werken der Medizingeschichte gehört. Auf insgesamt 726 handkolorierten Lithografien, die von Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), einem Schüler Jacques Louis David, ausgeführt wurden, sind die meisten Präparate lebensgroß abgebildet. Die präzise wie auch ästhetische Darstellung verweist geradezu auf die vorausgegangenen Laboruntersuchungen, die Grundlage jeder einzelnen zeichnerischen Umsetzung bilden. Durch die aufwändige Kolorierung werden die Tafeln schließlich zum erlesensten Anschauungsmaterial, wie ein Vergleich mit unkolorierten Ausgaben sehr deutlich werden lässt.
