No. 255 of 400 copies. 187p. Illustrated with collotype reproductions of 10 etchings by T. Otten after designs by Coypel. Translated by Reginald Bretnor. Bound in blue cloth with red cloth panels gilt. "Les Chats, a collection of eleven letters and the poems on cats and their ways, was first published in 1727. Thought an immediate success among cat lovers, the book quickly became the subject of many heartless satires and skits and it author eventually withdrew it from his collected works. In spite of all this it has triumphantly survived and in its translation by Reginald Bretnor will continue to give much pleasure and delight." (Cock-A-Hoop 213).

Number 48 of 100 copies specially bound in deluxe morocco binding. INSCRIBED BY TRANSLATOR REGINALD BRETNOR to famous whistleblower Peter Buxton: "To Pete Buxtun, all best and kindest, Reginald Bretnor" with caricature of a cat beneath his signature. In fine condition, bright and clean inside and out. Housed in the original slipcase which is near-fine with slight rubbing. Laid in are three related pieces: A greeting card signed by Bretnor and his wife; a catalog page featuring the book with an attached note from Bretnor to Buxtun; and an article written by Bretnor about the history of cats in the American West. Peter Buxtun was a former employee of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) who was the whistleblower responsible for ending the infamous Tuskegee syphilis experiment. In 1965, Buxtun heard about a study by the USPHS where African-American servicemen were not treated for having syphilis. He began a campaign within the USPHS to have the men treated, but for seven years was rebuffed. Despairing of ever getting the men treated, he told The New York Times about the story which led to his testimony before a Senate committee and subsequently to the National Research Act of 1974.

First edition thus; number 8 of 100 copies specially bound by E. W. Hiscox. Moncrif (1687-1770) was a French writer, courtier, and academician now best known for his Histoire des Chats, first published in 1727. In letter form, Moncrif discusses the role of cats throughout history and his work can be read both as a satire of pedantic academic writing and a sincere tribute to the domesticated feline. "Let us calm ourselves. one day we shall see the merits of Cats generally recognized. It is impossible that we should not come to feel that in our Cat we possess a friend who is the best of company, an admirable Pantomimist, a born Astrologer, a perfect Musician, in short the union of the talents & the graces" (p. 104-5). Tall quarto. Original dark blue and red morocco, titles and publisher's device to spine gilt, cat design to front board gilt, top edge gilt, other untrimmed. Housed in a dark blue cloth slipcase. 10 full-page illustrations by Coypel, taken from the first edition in 1727. Very light sunning to spine, still a fine copy, in very lightly rubbed slipcase.
