First edition. Illustrated by Biala. Moderate general wear, some loss at the crown, light dampstain on topedge slightly affecting very top margin of a few pages, hinges tender and starting in a couple of places but neatly strengthened, about very good in a worn and chipped, good only dust jacket. The Dedication Copy, Inscribed on the half-title to Caroline Gordon and Allen Tate: "The dedicatrix & dedicator to the dedicatees / with all love from Biala-Ford Madox Ford. New York April MCMXXXV." The printed dedication reads: "To Caroline Gordon / who chronicles another South / and to Allen Tate / Who came to Provence and there wrote to 'That Sweet Land' the poem called 'The Mediterranean' and where we went in the boat was a long bay. F.M.F. and B." Ford was a close friend, mentor, and the driving force in encouraging her to finish her first novel *Penhally*. She would dedicate her second book *Aleck Maury, Sportsman* to him. According to the index, Tate appears eight times in the text. *Provence* was published in late March of 1935, a few days before this copy was inscribed for Gordon and Tate. The dedication copy.
