From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and inscribed to him: "For Douglas Fairbanks -- who played a part in this decision -- Fred Freed." Fairbanks (1909-2000) was an iconic American actor from Hollywood’s Golden Era (his credits include “Gunga Din”), and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II. He is mentioned on page 92 of this political history, where it is revealed that a paper he wrote while a lieutenant attached to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, on the problem of defeating Japan, was influential to Eugene Dooman, and that it became the preface to the Potsdam Declaration.

Signed Typescript from the Japanese Home Service KON 630 KCS at 6:00 AM Tuesday 8/7 which reads, in part: “A small number of B-twenty-nines penetrated into Hiroshima city a little after eight AM yesterday morning and dropped a small number of bombs. As a result a considerable number of homes were reduced to ashes and fires broke out in various parts of the city...The enemy has exposed his cold bloodeness and atrocious nature more and more in killing innocent people by the use of this new-type bomb. ... The enemy has been carrying out large-scale propaganda on the effectiveness of this new-type bomb since using these bombs, but as long as we formulate strong steel-like measures to cope with this bomb, it will be possible to keep damage to a minimum...” Signed at bottom "Thomas W. Signed book " 509th Composite Group History", hardcover, 103 pages. This book is a pictorial album of the 509th Composite Group following them from Wendover Field to them stationed in Tinian. Introduction on first page written and signed by Colonel "Paul W. Tibbets". Across from Tibbets signature Navigator Theodore Van Kirk writes entirely in his own hand: "It was an easy mission because everything went according to plan...The major concerns about the mission were 1. would the bomb work 2. getting away from the blast . Remember this had never been done before and it was a great unknown. When the bomb exploded there was a sense of relief - it had worked. It didn't destroy the airplane. When we looked at the city of Hiroshima it was covered by a cloud of smoke and dust topped by the large mushroom cloud going up to 42,000 ft." Signed "Theodore Van Kirk - Navigator Enola Gay - Hiroshima 6 Aug 1945." In excellent condition.

First edition thus of Newton's reports to the Privy Council or the Treasury during his position of Master of His Majesty's Mint, the report signed and dated in print 21 September 1717. Newton was first appointed warden of the Mint in May 1696, rising to the position of Master following the death of Thomas Neale in December 1699. "Macaulay avers in his history that Newton - independently, I suppose, of his public action in reference to the Re-Coinage - has left no exposition of his opinions touching the currency. The eloquent historian thus leaves out of view the well-known report of 1717, upon which was based the reduction of the Guinea from 21 shillings and 6 pence to 21 shillings. It would seem, then, that the doctrinal importance of this Report had escaped recognition from the English historian, though as I have had occasion to ascertain, it was the subject of appreciative comment in France and Prussia more than a century ago.
