He was a tutor of mathematics at Harvard for the following six years and then a professor until 1829 when he resigned to become a civil engineer where he gained recognition in his field. Cushing was of the Harvard class of 1817 and then tutored in mathematics and natural philosophy, studied law and became a statesman filling several legislative and political posts over the years. From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and inscribed to him: "For Douglas Fairbanks -- who played a part in this decision -- Fred Freed." Fairbanks (1909-2000) was an iconic American actor from Hollywood’s Golden Era (his credits include “Gunga Din”), and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II. He is mentioned on page 92 of this political history, where it is revealed that a paper he wrote while a lieutenant attached to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, on the problem of defeating Japan, was influential to Eugene Dooman, and that it became the preface to the Potsdam Declaration.

As a result a considerable number of homes were reduced to ashes and fires broke out in various parts of the city...The enemy has exposed his cold bloodeness and atrocious nature more and more in killing innocent people by the use of this new-type bomb. ... The enemy has been carrying out large-scale propaganda on the effectiveness of this new-type bomb since using these bombs, but as long as we formulate strong steel-like measures to cope with this bomb, it will be possible to keep damage to a minimum...â Signed at bottom "Thomas W. Signed book " 509th Composite Group History", hardcover, 103 pages. This book is a pictorial album of the 509th Composite Group following them from Wendover Field to them stationed in Tinian. Introduction on first page written and signed by Colonel "Paul W. Tibbets". Across from Tibbets signature Navigator Theodore Van Kirk writes entirely in his own hand: "It was an easy mission because everything went according to plan...The major concerns about the mission were 1. would the bomb work 2. getting away from the blast . Remember this had never been done before and it was a great unknown. When the bomb exploded there was a sense of relief - it had worked. It didn't destroy the airplane. When we looked at the city of Hiroshima it was covered by a cloud of smoke and dust topped by the large mushroom cloud going up to 42,000 ft." Marx. The book is a detailed account of the events relating to the bombing of Hiroshima. Van Kirk who was a big player in those events writes in his hand on title page. "A generally good account of our mission to drop the first atomic bomb over Hiroshima.
