Signed "William Cogswell's Book" on title page top margin. Good,binding quite secure, cover worn, all pages have some light staining but easily legible, one page has tiny hole in middle of page. .

Half dark green morocco, rubbed, without title as issued, having only captioned title, single leaf of what appears to be part of a drab wrapper bound before first leaf (browned), frontispiece portrait of the author from a daguerrotype by Anthony Edwards & Co., engraved for the "Democratic Review" by T. Doney, printed by J. Neale, some foxing of the portrait, signed and dated by the author on the last page. First edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed on the inserted leaf or part of wrapper "Mr. James Hayward from his friend, C. C. " James Hayward, was in the class of 1819. He was a tutor of mathematics at Harvard for the following six years and then a professor until 1829 when he resigned to become a civil engineer where he gained recognition in his field. Cushing was of the Harvard class of 1817 and then tutored in mathematics and natural philosophy, studied law and became a statesman filling several legislative and political posts over the years. From the library of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and inscribed to him: "For Douglas Fairbanks -- who played a part in this decision -- Fred Freed." Fairbanks (1909-2000) was an iconic American actor from Hollywood’s Golden Era (his credits include “Gunga Din”), and a highly decorated naval officer of World War II. He is mentioned on page 92 of this political history, where it is revealed that a paper he wrote while a lieutenant attached to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, on the problem of defeating Japan, was influential to Eugene Dooman, and that it became the preface to the Potsdam Declaration.

First edition, limited issue of Michael Connelly's fifteenth Harry Bosch novel, comprising both the lettered edition (copy U of 26) and numbered edition (49 of 100). This special issue preceded the trade edition. Each volume is quarter-bound in leather-like fabric with marbled paper-covered boards and gilt spine stamping. First editions, both signed by Connelly on the limitation page. Both copies are fine and come housed together in a custom black cloth clamshell case; the books are additionally protected by custom tissue and acetate jackets. Signed book " 509th Composite Group History", hardcover, 103 pages. This book is a pictorial album of the 509th Composite Group following them from Wendover Field to them stationed in Tinian. Introduction on first page written and signed by Colonel "Paul W. Tibbets". Across from Tibbets signature Navigator Theodore Van Kirk writes entirely in his own hand: "It was an easy mission because everything went according to plan...The major concerns about the mission were 1. would the bomb work 2. getting away from the blast . Remember this had never been done before and it was a great unknown. When the bomb exploded there was a sense of relief - it had worked. It didn't destroy the airplane. When we looked at the city of Hiroshima it was covered by a cloud of smoke and dust topped by the large mushroom cloud going up to 42,000 ft." Signed "Theodore Van Kirk - Navigator Enola Gay - Hiroshima 6 Aug 1945." In excellent condition.

[3], [1 blank] pp.Very rare first issue (of two) of a late 18th-century decree by the Portuguese King José I (1714-1777) dealing with difficulties in the transportation of enslaved people from Mozambique to Brazil. This text, dated 12 December 1772 and signed “Rey” (King) at the end, is also signed by the notorious Portuguese nobleman and diplomat Marquez de Pombal. Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, 1st Marquis of Pombal (1699-1782), who was the Secretary of State of the Kingdom during the reign of Dom José I in the period of 1750-1777. It is concluded with a formal text, dated 18 December 1772 and signed by João Baptista de Araújo, a senior officer of the Secretariat of State.In 1761, Marquez de Pombal prohibited the importation of enslaved people in Portugal and Portuguese India, not for humanitarian reasons, but because they were needed for labour in Brazil. He stimulated the trade of, mostly African, enslaved people for that colony and with his support two companies for slave trade were founded, the Companhia Geral de Comércio do Grão-Pará e Maranhão and the Companhia Geral de Comércio de Pernambuco e Paraíba. Both companies were privileged and had a monopolistic character. Their lists of shareholders included many Portuguese noblemen and clergy. Between 1757 and 1777, more than 25000 enslaved people were imported to Pará and Maranhão from West African ports.The two issues can be identified by their catchwords on p. [1]: issue one shows the catchword as “a vol-”, that catchword was changed in the second issue to “a”.The inner margin shows some signs of the previous binding.
