WINNIE THE POOH CHRISTOPHER ROBIN CUT-OUT DOLLS
by [Milne, A.A.]
New York: Stephen Slesinger, 1935. Near fine.. First edition of this remarkably intact large-format WINNIE THE POOH paper doll set, depicting the characters from the stories in a style much closer to the original stuffed animals that inspired the stories. The characters of the Hundred Acre Wood have a long and fascinating merchandising history, even before the brand-conscious Disney adaptation. A. A. Milne sold the US trade rights for the characters to literary agent and licensing pioneer Stephen Slesinger in 1930. With Slesinger's marketing prowess, "Pooh [became] an industry in the thirties," writes Ann Thwaite; by that time, "Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and the rest were on their way to being lodged permanently... in the folk-memories of the English-speaking people, part of our common language and frame of reference." (Slesinger's widow in turn licensed Pooh to Disney in 1961.) This paper doll book is an excellent example of Slesinger's merchandising prowess: Christopher Robin's design reflects the style and stance of a boy from the thirties. Exceedingly rare complete in this original edition, put into perspective by the much later facsimile more commonly seen. 17'' x 9.75''. Original color pictorial wrappers with perforated punch-outs. [6] leaves of doll outfits to cut out, printed one side only. A touch of toning to front; a bit of rubbing to spine. Sharp, bright, and intact.

AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) Weeks Before the Publication of WINNIE-THE-POOH
by MILNE, A. A
(London), 29 September 1926. Letter. Crease from mailing otherwise Fine. A two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) on both sides of 5-1/2" x 7-3/8" personal stationery to "My dear Sir" [Vincent Seligman]. Written just weeks before the publication of Milne's most famous work, WINNIE-THE-POOH. This fine letter offers insight into Milne's sharp sense of humor and includes indirect references to his most famous book. Milne refers to a person in his letter as a "cygnet" (a young swan), a reference which may have been in mind as Winnie The Pooh was a blended name created by Milne, being a combination of the name "Pooh," after a cygnet swan they met on holiday, and "Winnie," a black bear cub he often saw at the London Zoo. There is also a lighthearted poke at his publisher, Methuen. In part: "I have arrived safely at the house to which you sent me, and think that I shall like the situation. I wanted to begin a serial story for the DAILY MAIL at once, but the man here said 'No, there's a letter we must write first,' and I said 'Oh, I see,' and began writing 'Dear Methuen,' but he snatched me away from the paper, and said it wasn't that sort of letter at all, which disappointed me rather because I thought I had got a literary situation. But he promised me we should do some poetry afterwards, and I said 'All right.' And of course when he began 'Dear Vincent,' I said 'Oh, know that man well; let me write the letter, while you get the ink off your hands.' He was terribly pleased with me, and I'm to keep on saying 'Thank you' until I run out of ink.... But I really am to say 'Thank you very much.... Assuring you, Sir, of my respects, and again thanking you for obtaining me this literary situation which I have always wanted from a cygnet so to speak. Yours faithfull [sic] The Pen. P.S. It was his fault about the ink, not mine. T.P. P.P.P. Now we are going to practise his signature: A. A. Milne. P.P.P.S. He says that's the best he's ever done." A delightful letter. Vincent Seligman was a banker who ran the London bank Seligman Brothers. He and his wife Barbara were close friends of the Milnes. Seligman dedicated his book, OXFORD ODDITIES, to Milne.

Winnie-the-Pooh
by A A Milne
A scarce, signed first Tauchnitz edition of A A Milne's classic children's novel 'Winnie-The-Pooh'. Signed by both Milne and E H Shepard to the title page. Shepard's signature is dated 1933. A superior copy of this Tauchnitz edition, which was published several years after Methuen's first edition of 1926. Â Milne was a prolific author and is now best-remembered for his creation of Winnie-The-Pooh and his many friends. Â A charming collection of ten children's stories featuring this famous character. To this collection there are classic tales such as when Winnie gets stuck in Rabbit's door, Piglet meeting a Heffalump, and Pooh meeting some bees. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, in an excellent condition. Minor shelf-wear to the extremities. Repairs to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright. Occasional light spots to pages. The Pooh Books: WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG; WINNIE THE POOH; NOW WE ARE SIX; THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER
by Milne, A.A.; Shepard, Ernest H.
London: Methuen, 1928. Overall near fine in very good to near-fine jackets.. A beautiful collection of first editions of the Pooh Books, all in original dust jackets. In 1933 Compton Mackenzie described the publication of the first Pooh Book, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG as marking "an epoch as positively as any children's book has ever marked one. It is not extravagant to surmise that a distant posterity may find in that volume of children's verse a key with which to unlock the present more easily than with any contemporary novel, poem, or play" (quoted in Thwaite). The series is an evocative reflection of English childhood in the 1920s, yet transcends the time and place of its making for each new generation to discover and fall for. 4 volumes, 7.5'' x 5'' each. Blue, green, red and pink cloths. In original color printed dust jackets. Top edges gilt. WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG has page ix, not the very rare first state. Housed in custom cloth covers with leather spine labels (VERY YOUNG label misdated 1926). Books solidly near-fine or better, with some offsetting around the firm hinges; ink gift inscription in VERY YOUNG, POOH CORNER with slight lean. Jacket of VERY YOUNG with light chipping at spine extremities, touch of expert repair to head, and faint stain around upper joint; jackets of WINNIE and SIX are sunned on spines with a bit of wear to heads of spines (barely visible repair on SIX); POOH CORNER jacket stunning.

London: Methuen, 1926. First edition. Near fine in near fine jacket.. This is a beautiful copy of the deluxe signed edition. 8.75'' x 7''. Original quarter blue cloth, light blue paper boards. In original blue printed dust jacket. Illustrated by Shepard in black and white throughout; folding map at rear. Printed on handmade paper. xvi, 158, [2] pages. Signed by Milne and Shepard on limitation page. The Pooh Books: WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG; WINNIE THE POOH; NOW WE ARE SIX; THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER
by Milne, A.A.; Shepard, Ernest H.
London: Methuen, 1928. First editions. Overall fine in near-fine jackets.. Complete set of first editions of the Pooh Books, all in original dust jackets, with WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG signed by Milne and Shepard. The series is an evocative reflection of English childhood in the 1920s, yet transcends the time and place of its making for each new generation to discover - and fall for. As the first book in the series, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG is the most difficult to find signed, making this an especially desirable set. 4 volumes, 7.5'' x 5'' each. Original blue, green, red and pink cloths. In original color printed dust jackets. Top edges gilt. WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG has page ix, not the very rare first state. Signed by Milne and Shepard on title page of WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG. Contemporary Methuen ad laid into SIX. Housed in beautiful blue goatskin box with in-laid Pooh design on front board. Books all fine, with only a bit of the typical offsetting in the gutter: Firm hinges, fresh cloth, clean text, no inscriptions. Jackets range fine (WINNIE-THE-POOH) to very good (HOUSE, with some small chips to spine ends not affecting text and a long closed tear to front joint); WWVY and SIX solidly near fine with only a bit of shallow chipping and touch of toning to spine of SIX: else little soil or sunning.
