The book is in about good condition with numerous problems. However, the binding is tight and the book seems to be complete. Quarter bound in leather with marbled paper boards, the book has scuffed and rounded corners and two sections of loss on the spine, each about 1 1/2" The paper is toned with some foxing and staining especially along the edges, but the paper is still fairly supple. The gilt title and decorations on the spine are bright. Hinges may have been reinforced. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 265. 6 ads pages; Famous abridged version of Oliver Goldsmith's Roman history which he prepared as a school text. This is a copy of the relatively scarce edition published in Dublin. It includes exercises at the end of each section.

Originally published in 1818, this work is a scarce tenth edition of "Pinnock's improved edition of Dr. Goldsmith's abridgment of the history of Rome", written for the use of Schools. Â Oliver Goldsmith (1728 Â 1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, dramatist, and poet. He is best known for his novel "The Vicar of Wakefield" (1766). With a frontispiece portrait of Goldsmith, a half-title page illustration, and folding map. William Pinnock (1782Â1843) was a British publisher, educational writer and bookseller. Prior owner"s ink inscription to recto of front endpaper, dated 1834. With two pages of publisher"s advertisements to the rear. In original full calf binding. Some rubbing to the boards and spine, particularly the rear board and head of the spine. Some of the leather at the head of the spine has come away. Rubbing to the extremities. Signature to recto of front endpaper date 1834. Pastedown papers are fraying slightly to the hinges. Internally, generally firmly bound. Rear page is missing after p451. Pages are quite age-toned with some spotting throughout. Folding plate is torn to the centre and top right. Good.
