This is the famous "Bible de Royaumont," popular in France and elsewhere in Europe from the latter part of the 17th century on. This very rare 1764 edition was published in Vienna. Sieur de Royaumont is assumed to be a pseudonym for Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709) - a historiographer of Port-Royal and companion in captivity of Lemaistre de Sacy in Bastille. It was issued in various formats and reissued after the first edition appeared in Paris 1670. 195mm tall x120mm. 596 pages. Rebound in full brown calf, in fine condition, but loose at spine. First pre-title page missing. Some tanning, but overall in very good condition. Profusely illustrated with many engravings. Corner of page 301 torn with a few words of text cut off, but otherwise in very good condition.

With Full title (in original French): "l'Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament, Avec des Explications Edifiantes, Tirees des Saints Peres, Pour Regler les Moeurs dans Toutes Sortes de Conditions, Dediee a Monseigneur le Dauphin. Par le Sieur de Royaumont, Prieur de Sombreval". The History of the Old & New Testament, with Edifying Explanations Drawn from the Holy Fathers, to Adjust the Manners in all Kinds of Conditions, was first published in 1670, is known as the Royaumont Bible, & variously attributed to both Nicholas Fontaine & Lemaître de Sacy. TEXT in FRENCH. Includes engraved frontispiece (extra-illustrated title page), title page small vignette, plus hundreds of copperplate ENGRAVINGS throughout. Almost every second page contains a small engraving. A total of 267 in-text engravings (183 for the Old Testament, & 84 for the New Testament) (in addition to frontispiece & title page). Also with numerous tailpieces. With Abrege de la Chronologie Sainte (with tables) printed at rear. "Sieur de Royaumont" was used as a pseudonym by both Nicholas Fontaine & Isaac-Louis Lemaître de Sacy. Nicholas Fontaine (or Nicolas) (1625-1709) was a Jansenite, of the Port-Royal movement that strove to purify Catholicism. Fontaine was confined to the Bastille, where he apparently composed this work, under the pseudonym Sieur de Royaumont. Though Fontaine was a Greek scholar of some standing, his version of the bible was written in a popular style, blending a modified text with interpretations. Isaac-Louis Lemaître de Sacy (1613-1684), a priest of Port-Royal, was a theologian & French humanist. He is best known for his translation of the most widespread French Bible in the 18th century, also known as the Bible de Port-Royal. Fontaine & Lemaître de Sacy were imprisoned in the Bastille together in the 1660s. They possibly collaborated on this work. NOTE: Interestingly, this copy from the Browne family Library of WESTPORT HOUSE, with original printed armorial BOOKPLATE affixed to front pastedown. The elaborately illustrated bookplate shows the Browne family crest & coat-of-arms with "Westport House" printed below & French motto "Suivez Raison" incorporated into the design. "Westport House in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, was the ancestral seat of the Marquesses of Sligo up until July 2014. It was built by the Browne family in the 18th Century, near the site of an O'Malley castle. The story of Westport House & the Browne family is a microcosm for the wider &, at times, turbulent history of Ireland. Each generation has had to contend with & adapt to the prevailing social, political & religious changes encountered along the way. Westport House is one of the few remaining Irish historic homes of national & international significance still in the ownership of the original family. Today it is considered one of Ireland's most beautiful historic homes open to the public." Bound in full leather (tree calf), raised bands, gilt lettering & floral design in compartments to spine, marbled endpapers, all edges of book block stained red, green silk ribbon page marker. Slight handling wear, front hinge a little loose, a few small marginal tears (no text loss), some mild offsetting from engravings, otherwise a nice clean tight solid leatherbound copy. All engravings in bright fine condition. Full pagination as follows: endpaper, frontispiece, title page, 2pp (dedication), 5pp (avertissement), 4pp (table), 1pp (preface), 576pp. Page 471 misprinted "437". Unique copy from Westport House. La première édition de "L' Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament" date de 1670. Le privilège pour notre exemplaire, accordé à Guillaume Desprez, imprimeur-libraire ordinaire du roi & du clergé de France, date du 16 juillet 1745, cédé à moitié à son associé Cavelier fils. L'impression du volume est partagée avec d'autres imprimeurs-libraires, dont Hansy et Herissant, par accord du 23 avril 1751. Notre exemplaire semble avoir été réimposé d'une édition précédente avec les seuls changements des pages de titres datées respectivement de 1752 et 1750. La question de l'attribution de l'ouvrage à Nicolas Fontaine et non à Le Maistre de Sacy est connue (Brunet, IV, 1433). "L'Histoire du Vieux et du Nouveau Testament" témoigne de la volonté d'insérer les textes sacrés, abrégés et illustrés, dans une dimension morale et pédagogique. La dédicace au Dauphin - il a 9 ans en 1670 - tend à le prouver. Mais l'ouvrage est également destiné "à toucher les âmes et inspirer la piété".des "Chrétiens en quelque état et dans quelques conditions qu'ils puissent être". Les figures sont reprises pour la plupart du graveur Matthäus Mérian (1593-1650). Reliure pastiche, mais de qualité, un certain nombre de restauration en marge de pages (exemples pp. 153-159 ou 355, manque de papier à la page 487 sans conséquence. Bon exemplaire.(B42). Hardcover in need of a new binding. Both boards detached but present (full leather, but tattered). Spine strip missing, leaving bare folded, sewn pages with a trace of backing paper. Title page and first signature detached. Final 2 sheets detached as well. 546 pages. Separate title page for the New Testament. Contains all 271 engravings, including the two by Le Clerc on pages 21 and 331. Several very nice dragons appearing in Revelations, as well. Engravings are on every odd numbered page. Inserted pages present between 296 and 297. Four or five engravings have an orange grid drawn lightly over them. Measures 8.5 x 11.5 inches. Wide margins. Engravings are 4 x 6 inches. Margins thumbed and sometimes darkened. General toning to the paper. A few small examples of paper repair, a few small holes, bottom quarter of page 55/56 repaired with large paper patch. A but of wrinkling to the bottom inside corner of the final 20-30 pages as if from long-ago moisture. Despite the lengthy list of flaws, the book is here in its entirety and is only a short visit to the binder from cleaning up quite nicely. This is the scarce first edition of the illustrated seventeenth century French bible. At the date of the posting, this is the only copy in the United States.
