[Lady Chatterley's Lover] My Skirmish with Jolly Roger [offered with:] A Propos of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Being an essay extended from "My Skirmish with Jolly Roger"
LAWRENCE, D. H. [David Herbert, 1885-1930]
Publisher: Random House... Date published: 1930 Format: Hardcover

Copy No. 241 of D. H. Lawrence's separately published introduction to the Paris popular edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover, together with the first trade edition of the expanded introduction, published the following year under the title A Propos of Lady Chatterley's Lover. Jolly Roger: Slim Demy 8vo (218 x 147mm): [12]pp, with scarce erratum slip laid in. Publisher's speckled beige paper-covered boards, matching beige paper title label printed in black to upper cover, patterned end papers printed in rose and black. A Very Fine copy without noticeable flaw. A Propos: Slim crown 8vo (189 x 115mm): 62,[2]pp, with title-page vignette. Publisher's French blue cloth ruled and lettered in brown; salmon-pink illustrated dust jacket ruled and lettered in black and priced 3/6. An excellent example, tightly bound and clean throughout. Roberts A48 (Although the limitation statement states that 600 copies were printed, "the first printing consisted of 700 copies according to the publishers.") and A48b. These introductions were Lawrence's response to the controversy of Lady Chatterley's Lover and the rampant piracy of the novel. In the spring of 1928, Lawrence had commissioned the Tipografia Guintina, in Florence, to print Lady Chatterley's Lover after it was rejected by numerous English publishers. He planned to sell one thousand signed and numbered copies for £2 each, with friends acting as agents. By the end of the year, nearly all copies were sold, despite (or perhaps because of) the novel being banned from the United States and about to be suppressed in London. In these introductions, Lawrence took a two-pronged approach to the defense of Lady Chatterley's Lover. He began by explaining his decision to bring out an authorized popular edition, in response to the piracies. Then he broached the topic of sex , arguing in favor of treating sex respectfully but explicitly in literature. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Lady Chatterley's Lover - Penguin Designer Classic
D H Lawrence - SIGNED PAUL SMITH
Publisher: Penguin Designer... Date published: 2006 Format: Hardcover

IMMACULATE NEW copy of this supreme collectable in the Penguin Classic Anniversary Editions. This remarkable and very beautiful edition has become the most sought after edition in the series by far. Sir Paul Smith designed the book, and chose to cover the board binding in delicate embroidered silk, which features the flowers Lawrence mentions in the book. The silk has been used for every aspect of this gorgeous book; even the Penguin logo is embroidered in silk. This particular copy has a unique signed pictorial card from the great designer himself, which is loose laid on the title page. This really is a breathtaking production in every way, from its large format pages to its silk covering over the top of the binding boards, all the way to the heavy lucite case that was especially designed for the book, and which has a subtle explanatory text silk screened on to it, and which I found too difficult to photograph. For once, the hype is well worth the result. Truly, this is a classic. 0.0 0.0 0.0

D. H. Lawrence
Publisher: Florence, Italy Date published: 1928 Format: Hardcover

"Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D. H. Lawrence. Signed by the author on a limitation page from a Signed Limited Edition and affixed professionally by a bookbinder. This edition is likely pirated, printed shortly after the first edition and is nearly identical in format to the true first. Without the copyright notice of Tipografia Giuntina at the bottom of the copyright page and "Privately Printed, Florence, 1928" on the title page. From Wikipedia: "The first edition was printed privately in Florence, Italy, with assistance from Pino Orioli; an unexpurgated edition could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929.) The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical (and emotional) relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words." Measuring 9 ¼ inches tall, the book has been rebound in beautiful deckled paper and ¾ red leather with raised bands, gilt rules, gilt fleur de lis, gilt title/author lettering on spine and deckled pastedowns and end papers. Structurally and appearance wise, it is in very good condition. With black and red text to title page, interior contents are in very good + condition, all pages present, all bright with no errant marks or names. Top corners of most pages show light creasing. Page ends show some age soiling largely to top and rough cut fore edges. Top page ends also show a short thin streak of soiling and a couple of extremely faded very small damp stains near crown. Publisher: Privately Printed... Date published: 1928 Format: Hardcover

First edition and signed limited edition of D.H. Lawrence's most ambitious, significant, and explicit work on sex and romance. Octavo, original publisher's mulberry paper-covered boards with white paper spine label, central Phoenix motif to the front panel. One of one thousand copies signed by D.H. Lawrence on the limitation page. In very good condition, bookplate to the front pastedown. Available by subscription only in this private Florence printing and banned in England and America for obscenity, Lady Chatterley's Lover was Lawrence's most ambitious attempt to present his vision of the enigma and complexity of sex. The story of the physical and emotional relationship between a working class man and an upper class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex soon led to routine confiscation and destruction of any copies police and customs officials could find in both England and the United States. An unexpurgated edition was not published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960, when it was the subject of a watershed obscenity trial against the publisher Penguin Books. Penguin won the case under the Obscene Publications Act 1959, and quickly sold 3 million copies. The book was also banned for obscenity in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Japan and was not available in the United States until Grove Press brought the matter to court in 1959, over 30 years after the publication of the first edition (Roberts, 42a).

This is simply a good tpo very gppd copy of one of the major works of British literature in the 20th century. Although poetical in the general treatment of its subject, this book is a landmark in the history of the English novel in that it depicts for the first time in a studied and unabashedly direct way the concrete sexual experience, accompanied by the uninhibited language of real life. The book was first published in Italy because of obstacles erected by the censor in Britain, where it did not circulate in unexpurgated form until 1960.

LAWRENCE, D.H.
Publisher: Florence Privately... Date published: 1928 Format: Hardcover

First edition, limited issue, number 302 of 1000 copies, signed by the author; large 8vo (23 x 17 cm); one or two minor marginal spots, else unmarked internally; publisher's mulberry coloured boards, Lawrence's phoenix device to upper board in black, white paper title label to spine printed in black, untrimmed, slight chipping to corners and foot of spine, spine ends slightly bumped, minor split to lower front joint but sound; preserved in brown cloth chemise within brown morocco gilt slip-case. This novel shines as an example of Lawrence's finite skill in conveying the nature of relationships and his use of characters to communicate his personal philosophy. His depiction of love-making (seen as shocking at the time) and the intimacy and sense of touch derives from his wish to restore an emphasis on the body and balance it with what he perceived to be Western civilisation's over-emphasis on the mind. Lawrence's writing and opinions earned him many enemies, censorship and misrepresentation of his creativity, which was his reflection on the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation, while also exploring issues such as emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct. To avoid British censorship and certain prosecution, this edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover was published privately in Florence therefore not only is it the first edition but the first unexpurgated edition, which would not be seen in the U. K. until 1960. Even then, the publisher, Penguin stood trial under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959, in which one of the objections was to the frequent use of the word 'fuck'. The prosecution was ridiculed for being out of touch with changing social opinions, particularly when the Chief Prosecutor, Mervyn Griffith-Jones asked if it were the kind of book 'you would wish your wife or servants to read.' The jury was less prudish and acquitted Penguin on all charges.
