The spine has sunned with a little offsetting to the front and rear covers. Price clipped. Original rich navy cloth boards in excellent condition with bright gilt titles to the spine. Slight toning to the text block edges and to the pages however free of any marks or foxing. pp. 547. Overall a good copy of Salman Rushdie's award winning book that has been perceived as blasphemous by some.nbsp;

The work is a 616 A4 page photocopy of Rushdie's original typescript, with the author's multiple manuscript revisions and corrections all reproduced. Signed by author to front end paper: 'With very best wishes to Alistair Rolfe' Some handling marks to the white covers otherwise a Fine tight clean copy which appears to be unread.

This very rare book has the very slightest separation at the head of the spine. There is also slight generalized rubbing to the top & bottom spine edges. The corners also have slight rubbing. the book was Signed in my presence, on the title-page, by the author at an appearance at Carlton College. There is a complete number line including "1" making it a True 1st Printing. There are NO remainder marks.The mylar protected "DJ" is price-intact ($19.95) and has very slight rubbing to the head & tail of the spine. There are NO tears. This really is a very lovely book considering it is over 20 years old.

London: Viking, 1988. Pages browning, else a fine copy of the Uncorrected Advance Proof in a fine proof dustwrapper. Signed and titled by Rushdie on the title page. Though there seem to be no textual differences to the first trade edition, the proof of The Satanic Verses has some unique features. For instance, there are no ornamental devices separating the sub-chapters, and the "Acknowledgements" page (549) is missing completely. Also, the beginning of the "Ayesha" chapter provides for numerical sub-divisions, which is unnecessary as there are none. This copy had no title on the tile page, so Rushdie kindly supplied it in his own writing. We have never seen any copies with the printed title of the book on the title page. The proof dustwrapper varies from the one of the first UK edition in that it is matt (though we have also had one glossy one), uses a different and bolder typeface for the lettering of the author's name and the title, has a box at the bottom of the inner flap and mentions both the UK and the US publishers at the bottom of the lower flap. The set is completed by both the exceptionally rare first trade edition in the purple variant dust wrapper with £12.95 as the pre-publication price. The book has been signed by Rushdie, and the usual blue wrappered trade edition with Whitbread wrap-raound band and signed to the Booker shortlist label on the front endpaper. A rare set of items.
