Hardback copy in cloth boards with gold gilt lettering and design, no dustjacket as issued. 16 coloured illustrations (with commentaries opposite) of selected medieval paintings reproduced from the Illuminated Manuscript in the Austrian National Library. Housed in cloth slipcase with gold gilt lettering and design to one side, pasted-on colour illustration to reverse. Le Livre Du Cueur D'Amours Espris (The Book of the Love Struck Heart) was written in 1457 by Rene of Anjou, the Duke of Anjou and Count of Provence, and exquisitely illustrated by his court painter Barthelemy de Cler (or d'Eyck). It fuses the conventions of Arthurian romance with an allegory of love based on the Romance of the Rose. This edition reproduces the plates, with commentaries.
