Winnie-the-Pooh Songs
[MILNE, A.A.], author; Frank LUTHER, tenor; H. [Harold] FRASER-SIMSON [music]
Publisher: Stephen Slesinger,... Date published: 1934

New York and Canada: Stephen Slesinger, Inc., copyright; Victor Talking Machine Co. of Canada, Ltd., records, 1934. Stiff wraps. Near fine/Fine. 12mo (7 3/8" x 8"); three 78 rpm records (most likely a shellac-based limestone or slate material used by Victor at the time), recorded both sides under the Victor label; labeled 221-A and B, 222-A and B, and 223-A and B; records housed in a blue stiff card stock folder with a color half-tone pictorial onlay to front folder; a small imperfection (depression) can be seen on record 222-A, however it does not interfere with the recording, and one only hears a slight pop; light soiling to outer folder and a few scratches to the lower left corner of the onlay, near fine with 3 records in fine condition.  This edition not in a WorldCat library; two libraries hold sound recordings published in 1934 as "More Winnie-the-Pooh Songs" The pictorial label features Christopher Robin, Piglet, and Pooh eating from a honey pot.  It is notable that Pooh is not dressed in the red shirt that Slesinger trademarked, and that Pooh first wore in 1931.  This recording is an early imprint by tenor Frank Luther with music by Harold Fraser-Simson, and the copyright held by Slesinger.  Another early record by the Victor Talking Machine Co., shows a round folder label with Pooh wearing a red shirt and in multiple poses.  No date appears on either and no further bibliographic information has been found. The records are labeled, "Winnie The Pooh, Christopher Robin Songs. (A.A. Milne-H. Fraser Simson) Frank Luther, Tenor with violin, clarinet and piano", with the following listed songs: 221-A: 1. Isn't It Funny, 2. Song Ho! For the Life of a Bear, 221-B Us Two, 222-A: The King's Breakfast, 222-B: The King's Breakfast, Concluded,  223-A: Buckingham Palace, 223-B: Vesper's.

WINNIE THE POOH CHRISTOPHER ROBIN CUT-OUT DOLLS
[Milne, A.A.]
Publisher: Stephen Slesinger Date published: 1935

New York: Stephen Slesinger, 1935. Near fine.. First edition of this remarkably intact large-format WINNIE THE POOH paper doll set, depicting the characters from the stories in a style much closer to the original stuffed animals that inspired the stories. The characters of the Hundred Acre Wood have a long and fascinating merchandising history, even before the brand-conscious Disney adaptation. A. A. Milne sold the US trade rights for the characters to literary agent and licensing pioneer Stephen Slesinger in 1930. With Slesinger's marketing prowess, "Pooh [became] an industry in the thirties," writes Ann Thwaite; by that time, "Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet and the rest were on their way to being lodged permanently... in the folk-memories of the English-speaking people, part of our common language and frame of reference." (Slesinger's widow in turn licensed Pooh to Disney in 1961.) This paper doll book is an excellent example of Slesinger's merchandising prowess: Christopher Robin's design reflects the style and stance of a boy from the thirties. Exceedingly rare complete in this original edition, put into perspective by the much later facsimile more commonly seen. 17'' x 9.75''. Original color pictorial wrappers with perforated punch-outs. [6] leaves of doll outfits to cut out, printed one side only. A touch of toning to front; a bit of rubbing to spine. Sharp, bright, and intact.
