New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., Inc. 1954 BOMC, 1954. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket. Octavo, hardcover, orange spine, black boards, edgeworn at spine extremities and corners, front hinge cracked. Reading copy only. No dj. 314 pp. Many illustrations. A great book about the independent Tibet, and its being swallowed into China! ! Translated by Richard Graves. Harrer was a German interned in British India from the beginning of World War II. Finally in 1943 he escaped from that internment and, following a lengthy travel across 'the roof of the world' he wound up in Lhasa penniless and in rags. Met with kindness in Lhasa, he was not expelled back to India. Instead he was allowed to stay in Tibet, to work for the government (he spoke passable Tibetan by this time) and to tutor the young Dalai Lama. When the Chinese Communists invaded Tibet in 1950 Harrer was forced to part from this lonely, able and affectionate youth. 314 pp.

FAIR/GOOD condition. Unfortunately, the dust jacket has been laminated, preserving forever the heavy chipping, tearing and creasing along the extremities, as well as lost to the jacket. This also includes old tape repairs, general toning, minor soiling and staining. minor soiling, staining and discoloration to the book covers. Moderate fading to the spine. Previous owners' name on the inside front cover. Dampstaining present in the gutters of the pages of photographs, as well as along the foredge of the title page.

With a colour frontispiece, one double-spread map and twenty-fine black and white photographs, mostly full-page or double-spread. A little fading to the publisher's top edge stain, and a little spotting to the edges and endpapers. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, a little spotted and chafed at the natural folds, and with some nicks, creasing and several tiny fractions of loss from the upper edge..

A scarce handsome brown full leather Collector's Edition of Harrer's classic book, signed by the author on the signature page. Originally published in 1953. This book tells of the author's autobiographical experience escaping from a British internment camp in northern India during World War II to the Tibetan capital of Lhasa where he established a strong relationship as a friend and tutor to the young Dalai Lama. Seven years later he was forced to flee Tibet when the Chinese overtook the country. It is his experiences during those seven years that give the story it's name. Mr. Harrer was born in 1912 and passed away in 2006 at the age of 93. In 1997 a major motion picture was made based n this book, starring Brad Pitt as Heinrich Harrer and David Thewlis as his companion, Peter Aufschnaiter. Reportedly David Thewlis is banned from ever entering China because of his role in this movie. In fine brown leather with gold gilt cover designs and page edges, moire silk endpapers and bound-in silk bookmark. Still in the original shrinkwrap and includes the publisher's note card and Certificate of Authenticity from Easton Press. Parrish Books guarantees all signatures as authentic.
