by William Cowper; Randolph Caldecott
A charming picture book containing four stories for children, illustrated in colour by the noted illustrator Randolph Caldecott. Rebound, lacking the title page and publication information.  R. Caldecott's Picture Book number one, comprising four tales for children, charmingly illustrated in both black and white and in colour. The tales being William Cowper's The Diverting History of John Gilpin: showing how he went farther than he intended, and came safe home again; The House That Jack Built; The Babes in the Wood;  and An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog.  A lovely, entertaining copy with rhyming tales, illustrated and compiled by the noted illustrator Randolph Caldecott, who greatly influenced the illustrations of nineteenth century children's books.  With various plated both in colour and in black and white to embellish and enrich the volume. Rebound in quarter vellum with cloth covered boards and marbled boards. Externally very smart with slight shelf wear and a slight rubbing to the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound.
