Heavy paper stock pages feature beautiful borders of decorative designs/illustrations. Condition: Binding reflects aging, including age toning, soiling, scattered discoloration spots, wear to corners (some showing a tad), periodic rippling of cloth on top cover, light fraying/short tears to top/foot of spine, edge wear, darkening/tanning of spine. Joints and hinges are tight. Two gift inscriptions, one dated 1856 another 1908 (the latter is a warm, touching inscription). Several signatures holding on with partial sewing. The expected age toning, light staining/soiling, foxing, and some fading and creases for a book over 178 years old. Overall Good. Text is clear and readable. Illustrations are vivid and in Very Good condition. Free of the smoke smell of a cigarette or cigar smoker. Original brown endpapers, front inner joint made good. All edges gilt. In the original binding of blue cloth over bevelled boards, ruled in black, decorated and titled in gilt, bright and clean, extremities blunted, with slight damage to the foot of the spine. A very nice copy.

192 pages, plus plates. Rebound by Whitman Bennett of New York in full Moroccan leather with raised spine bands creating six compartments. Gilt ruling and lettering, as well as five trout (? ) vignettes in spine compartments. All edges are gilded. The binder has beautifully used the original covers with elaborate gilt designs, as the front paste downs. There is a little separation of the front free end page from the following fly leaf. Occasional light foxing and offsetting. Volume remains tight and very attractive.
