London: George B. Wittaker, Ave Maria Lane, 1827. 2 engraved frontspiece portraits. Three-quarter dark blue morocco, marbled boards and matching endpapers, t.e.g., others uncut. Five raised bands, elaborate tooling in the compartments. Armorial bookplates of Viscount Birkenhead (Frederick Edwin Smith): First Earl of Birkenhead, brilliant orator and wit, he was Lord Chancellor of England (1919) and also Secretary of State for India (1824-8). Birkenhead was created an earl for his part in the Irish settlement in 1921. "Le Roi Soleil" and "Le Grand Monarque," Louis XIV (King of France 1643-1715), builder of the Palace of Versaille, after the death of his queen, Marie Therese of Austria, married Madam de Maintenon morganatically (1684). She had an important part in bringing him to his religious devotion of his later years, after a life of pomp and extravagence. Louis XIV's reign marked the apogee of the monarchial idea in politics and was the golden age for the arts. Mme de Maintenon was the last of his mistresses, whom he married secretly when she was in her fiftieth year and he in his forty-seventh. In acetate wraps.. First Edition. Three-Quarter Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
