New York: Limited Editions Club, 1935. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Grosz, George. No. 909 of 1500, quarto size, 237 pp., signed by George Grosz. William Sydney Porter (1862-1910), better known by his pen name O. Henry, was a prolific writer of short stroies, known for his inimitable hand in isolating certain elements of society and describing them with an incredible economy and grace of language; his stories are known for their twist endings. This publication by the Limited Editions Club contains numerous of O. Henry's stories, and is illustrated with watercolours by German artist George Grosz (1893-1959), best known for his caricatural drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. A prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity group during the Weiman Republic, Grosz creates grotesque characters rendered in soft, ethereal colour for this book, depicting the isolation often found at the fringes of society. ___DESCRIPTION: Full black buckram, gilt lettering on the spine, title page with watercolour by George Grosz, line drawings in black and full-page watercolours by Grosz throughout; linotype Janson type, Worthy special paper; quarto size (10.5" by 7.75"), pagination: [i-vi] vii-xi [xii-xiv] 1-220 [221-222] [1 colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 909, signed by George Grosz on the colophon. Housed in a slipcase covered in purple cloth, with gilt lettering on the spine. ___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, straight corners, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; very slight rubbing to the head and tail of the spine and to the corners, else fine.
