About This Item

Edinburgh: John Brown (Vols 3 -5). Good with no dust jacket. 1808. First Edition. Hardcover. Slightly AF - 5 Vols Complete, BUT LACKS Pages 1 to 8 which should have been at the beginning of the text of Volume 4. These missing pages are now included in the book as loose pages as photocopies/in facsimile. The 5 Vols published between 1805 and 1808. Vols 1 & 2 were published in 1805. Vols 3 & 4 published 1806 and Volume 5 published 1808. All uniformly bound in half-leather with blue marbled paper-covered boards and leather corners. Covers rubbed with age/storage, and heavily rubbed to the extremities, with some small losses mainly to the head/tails and corners of the set, but despite some splitting to the edges of the spines on a couple of volumes all hinges sound. Volume 3 LACKS the Title label. The volume numbers in Roman Numerals are to lower panels, very rubbed. Some pale foxing (light brown spotting) and light marks inside here and there. The names of 3 former owners are written in old faded ink to the front endpapers (date against the second one of 1832). NO illustration list in any of the volumes but an Index to each book. Volume 1 = (6) + 544pp. Including a tissue guarded engraved Title page, a printed Title page, plus 16 copper engravings and tables. Volume 2 = (6) + 547pp. Including a tissue guarded engraved Title page, a printed Title page, plus 24 copper engravings and tables. Volume 3 = (6) + 548pp. Including a tissue guarded engraved Title page, a printed Title page, plus 18 copper engravings and tables. Volume 4 = (6) - then minus 8 pp - but no sign of anything having been torn out. Looks to have been bound up without these pages? + 548pp. Including a tissue guarded engraved Title page, a printed Title page, plus 47 copper engravings and tables. Volume 5 = (6) + 574pp. Including a tissue guarded engraved Title page, a printed Title page, plus 2 copper engravings and tables and at the end of this volume 'Additional Description of Plates contained in this work - this is a small selection, no plate list per se. Illustrated with 107 engravings as well as the 5 engraved title pages to each volume. The engravings are in the main extremely clean, only a few (? 3) have some foxing and one is 'close-trimmed' losing the caption. The text is also generally very clean. (Volume 2 has a couple of holes in the text - one to pages 257/8 and the other on pages 273/4 (both only about 0.5 cm in diameter- candle wax drop burn? ). Content overall in very good condition. Some faults to the set as noted above, but o/w a nice tight set in an early 19th Century binding, likely contemporary to publication. This 5 volume set is heavy and overweight and will require extra postage depending on your location. Please ask the seller for postage costs or further info. See Images. ; Each Volume Thick 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
