Illustrated with maps and illustrations. Green cloth hardcover with red and gilt stamped insignia and gilt stamped title on front cover. Gilt stamped title and 2-star shoulder strap patch stamped on spine. Floral end papers. Light edge wear to cloth extremities. George Ellis Hartford Conn. name stamp on the verso of the frontispiece. Date stamp Nov 7 1924 and number 819 located on the title page (not an ex-library stamp). Cited twice in Nevins: Vol II page 73 - "Defensive in tone, the volume covers only the period of McClellan's generalship."; vol 1 page 124 - A classic rationalization by one of the war's most controversial figures.

Binding cracked at the table of contents, with the last page of the chapter listings loose from book. Binding is otherwise intact. Tape repairs to tissue guard over the frontispiece, with some attendant tanning; toned and sparsely foxed throughout. Interior else clean, text unmarked.
