Chicago, Illinois: H.H. Hardesty, 1875. Folio. 109pp. Complete. Rebound in 1/4 black leather and fine pebbled cloth wit original decorative outer board cloth laid over. Some unsightly staining, resembling excess binder's glue to front, near spine. Prominent area of dampstain to pervasive lower portion of interior contents. Section of loss from lower portion of "Table of Contents" leaf. A few tape repairs about torn leaves. Save for the mystery blemish to the front, a competent, attractive rebinding of an otherwise well handled, about good only, copy.

An original 1875 Hardesty atlas produced for Hancock County, Ohio (county seat Findlay). This copy in a competent modern rebinding with some dampstaining marring much of the interior though with some compelling pencil fashion sketches of 1920's womens fashion to versos of map plates and blank endpapers. With a folding GENERAL RAILWAY MAP OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA (Rand, Mcnally) in front, a full page MAP OF OHIO: 1874 (Hardesty) ; 26 additional hand-colored lithograph maps of the county, its individual townships, and municipalities, and 16 detailed, line-drawn lithograph plates of prominent landmarks, farmsteads, town and city views, etc... The Hardesty Co. of Chicago was a prominent late-19th Century maker of similar atlases, which appear to have been sold by traveling agents, covering particularly insurgent counties in Ohio, Indiana, and West Virginia. This copy with some obvious imperfetions, though rebound in an equally obvious attempt at preservation. Not without flaw, though a deeply appealing copy of a scarce atlas and unequaled record of Hancock County prior to its oil and natural gas booms in the decade following.
