Scott planned originally to translate a near complete manuscript of the work brought back from Turkey by Edward Wortley Montagu, written in 1764 and now in the Bodleian Library. Scott printed a description of the manuscript with a table of contents in William Ouseley's 'Oriental Collection'. However he abandoned the translation and instead revised Antoine Galland's French version (1704-1717), saying it was so correct it would be pointless to go over the original again. He added an introduction and some extra tales from other sources. His work was the first effort to translate 'Arabian Nights' into literary English. Half-leather boards are marked, scored and faded. Leading corners and edges are bumped and split. Abrasions on faded leather spines. Some spine ends are chipped. Page block and pages are tanned and marked. Light creases throughout pages. Previous owners' details penned on front pastedown and FEP of volume one. BEP of volume six is partially detached. Pastedown hinges are partially split but bindings remain intact.
