About This Item

London: Faber & Faber,, 1939. First English edition following the German of the previous year. Well represented institutionally, but decidedly uncommon on the market. "English translation of Bismillah!: Vom Huang-ho zum Indus. Wilhelm Filchner, scientist and explorer, at the age of 21 participated in his first expedition (1900), which led him to Russia. In 1903–05 made an expedition to Tibet. In Tibet again twice (1926–28 and 1935-1937), Filchner conducted cartographic surveys and magnetic observations. He also made a magnetic survey of Nepal (1939–40). Filchner's last mission to Tibet overlapped the controversial [SS Ahnenerbe] exploration led by German zoologist Ernst Schäfer (1938-39)" (Arcadian Library online, retrieved 28/03/2019) Octavo. Original black cloth, title gilt to the spine. Portrait frontispiece, plates, folding coloured map. A little rubbed and dusty, corners bumped, mildly cocked, pale toning to the text, small Arthur Probsthain bookseller's ticket to the front pastedown, ex-Times Book Club, label and issue slip carefully removed from the rear pastedown, remains very good. Yakushi F49b "astronomical and magnetic traverse in Central Asia".
