A small note, stating "With the compliments of" and signed by Kym Anderson is stapled to the front endpaper. From the library of Theodore W. Schultz (1902-1998), winner of the 1979 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences jointly with W. A. Lewis. Signed in ink on the front endpaper "T. W. Schultz 7/14/86." Schultz has added dozens of ink annotations and markings which are scattered throughout the text. Provides a comparable set of estimates of agricultural protection in 15 industrial countries, and explains why poor agrarian economies tend to tax agriculture and why, as they industrialize, countries tend to switch from taxing farmers to subsidising or protecting them..
