Epictetus (c. 50-c. 135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher from Asia Minor. Half of his principal work, the Discourses is extant and the Enchiridion is a popular digest of the work, both being recorded and published by his pupil, Arrian. Translated by Elizabeth Carter of Deal (1717-1806), poet, classicist and linguist and member of the Bluestocking Circle. Edited by Irish born writer and poet, Thomas William Rolleston (1857-1920), who had published the Teaching of Epictetus in 1886. With a long introductory essay by Frederic William Farrar (1831-1901), cleric, theologian, schoolteacher and classical scholar and Dean of Canterbury, 1895-1903.
