He met the young Dalai Lama who he later accompanied to India where he returned to Europe. Recognised as a 'great travel book' at the time. Covers are solid with interesting photographic cover art. There is gentle creasing to the tips and a little rub to top of spine and a little dustiness to back cover but overall good. Spine is solid and complete with a little creasing. World travel / Forbidden City of Lhasa / Self-directed education / Autobiographical: Young Austrian mountain climber and skier Heinrich Harrer was in Karachi, India, with the Nanga Parbat reconnaissance group. While awaiting a steamer to Europe, war broke out, and the British detained the mountaineers. Harrer and another escaped after many attempts by the group, and, disguised as East Indian, they spent 21 months making their way over the mountains to Tibet, gaining entrance where no other Westerners had under a guise as an advance team for an important one to follow. With patience and skill, Harrer becomes a confidant of the youthful Dalai Lama, Buddhist religious leader of Tibetans. He engineers projects and introduces a few sports. Details of Tibetan life are abundant herein through 1950 when Harrer returned to Europe.
