Original dark red linson boards flecked with blue, lettered gilt to spine, preserved in pictorial dustwrapper designed by Anthony Maitland; pp. [viii], 9-182; a near fine copy, without inscription, protected by a clean and pleasing, unclipped dustwrapper (£1.40) with a little light dusting and marking and one short, and faintly open, tear to lower joint at base of spine (7mm); scarce in any early edition. First U.K. edition, fifth impression, of this classic, which helped make science fiction mainstream for young adults; issued nine years after the first printing and in the same format. It has been described as "a journey through space and time, from universe to universe" for its main characters, Meg Murry, Charles Wallace Murry, and Calvin O'Keefe, as they seek to save both the Murrys' father, and the world. It has been adapted to film twice over the years, both times by Disney. First published in the US, this winner of the Newbery Medal, the Sequoyah Book Award, the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award and runner up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award, is a notoriously elusive, and valuable, book in first printing, regularly selling for over £7,000.

First English edition, Australian printing: octavo; hardcover, with gilt spine titles; 182pp. Moderate wear; slightly rolled; spine heel lightly softened; text block edges toned with some spotting and top edge dusted; offset to the endpapers; retailer's ink stamp to the front pastedown. Price-clipped dustwrapper is rubbed and edgeworn with some minor marks and spotting; spine panel sunned; slight chipping to the spine panel extremities with some small loss of text; a small tear along the upper hinge from the top edge (repaired using archival-quality materials); now professionally protected by non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good.

A first edition, first printing published by Constable in 1963. A near fine (or better) book without inscriptions. In a very good unclipped wrapper with some light loss to the foot of the spine and a little to corners. Presents well and a very rare children's fantasy which won the Newbery Medal in 1962.
