First edition, first impression, setting copy used for the British edition; 8vo; textual amendments in pencil throughout, slight toning to leaves, literary agent's rubber stamp to front free endpaper; publisher's blue cloth-backed grey and white paper covered boards, gilt lettering to spine, some discolouration to spine ends, faint marks to boards, extremities slightly rubbed, with the unclipped first issue pictorial dust-jacket priced $3.25, without the Newbery Medal to front panel, loss to spine at head and foot, some edge-wear, slight loss to corners, some dust-staining and toning to rear panel, overall a very good copy. A particularly interesting setting copy of this American classic in the scarce first issue dust-jacket, which gives an excellent insight into the adaptation of the book for the UK market. Internally there is a book stamp for Literary Agents D C Benson & Campbell Thomson Ltd and it is very likely that this copy was used by them to adapt the book for publication in the UK. There are a significant number of spelling amendments, for example the addition of an 's' to 'math' and an 'u' to 'colored', but also adaptations to make the book more readable like the use of 'form mistress' for 'teacher' and the consideration of whether 'the planetary people for Eng. ed. shd. not use American speech.'

First printing of the book that helped make science fiction stories for children mainstream. A journey to a fantastical land full of epic battles and philosophical musing, A WRINKLE IN TIME reads in many ways like an updated, science-based spin on the Narnia series. While Heinlein and others published science fiction for young adults before this, L'Engle popularized it among elementary-age titles. Initially, L'Engle had a difficult time getting it published: "After trying 'forty-odd' publishers (L'Engle later said 'twenty-six rejections'), L'Engle's agent returned the manuscript to her. Then at Christmas, L'Engle threw a tea party for her mother. One of the guests happened to know John Farrar of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, and insisted that L'Engle should meet with him. Although the publisher did not at the time publish a line of children's books, Farrar met L'Engle, liked the novel and ultimately published it" (Random House). Winner of the Newbery Award and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. A lovely copy, very hard to find in collectible condition. 8'' x 5.25''. Original quarter blue cloth, white speckled paper boards. In original unclipped ($3.25) blue pictorial dust jacket designed by Ellen Raskin. [10], 211, [2] pages. Book with faint fading on edge of boards as usual, else fine. Some shallow edgewear to jacket, slightly moreso around spine ends; rear panel with light soiling.

First edition of L'Engle's Newbery award-winning novel. Octavo, original half blue cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Sam, Tesser Well Madeleine L'Engle." Near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket that shows some light wear and a closed tear to the front panel. Without the Newbery Award-winning seal to the front panel. Jacket design by Ellen Raskin. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp example. âAt once a science fiction story, a philosophical meditation on the nature of Evil and Love and a coming-of-age novel, Wrinkle broke new ground in what was considered appropriate for young readers. Rejected by several publishers for being too complex, this title has amply proven LâEngleâs belief that âchildren are excited by new ideasâ and has been credited with bringing science fiction into the mainstream of childrenâs literature. This is LâEngleâs best workâ (Silvey, 401). A Wrinkle in Time is one of the most significant novels of our time. "A book that every person should read, a book that provides a road map for seeking knowledge and compassion even at the worst of times, a book to make the world a better place" (Cory Doctorow). It went on to win a Newbery Medal, Sequoyah Book Award, and Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award. It is the basis for the film directed by Ava DuVernay, starring Storm Reid, Reese Witherspoon, Zach Galifianakis, and Oprah Winfrey.
