Aunque muchos intelectuales del país pedían que María Luisa recibiese el Premio Nacional de Literatura ​ y la crítica nacional e internacional reconoció su relevancia para el desarrollo literario de la Región sudamericana ​ , este nunca le fue concedido.Su obra, relativamente breve en extensión, se centra en personajes femeninos y su mundo interno, a través del cual escapan de la realidad. Destacó, además, por no vincularse a ninguna corriente de la época, alejándose conscientemente de las vanguardias y el criollismo. Sus obras más conocidas son las novelas cortas La última niebla y La amortajada.
