This is a collection of 24 issues published in 1969 from arguably the most notable self-published journalist project of the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s -- the I.F. Stone Weekly. Stone was a leftist journalist of the World War II and Cold War era who became increasing unemployable in the McCarthyite 1950s. Stone responded by launching a self published periodical of keen investigative and critical reporting. He was particularly incisive in reporting on the Vietnam, international affairs and the foibles of government, Stone bird-dogged issues for his avid readers among the gatekeepers of the then all-powerful mainstream media. His work is an excellent study of the determination, quality and tactics needed to bring alternative voices and perspectives into a relatively closed media environment lacking the access to audiences available with the modern Internet. This lot includes all 24 issues published Jan. 13, 1969 to Dec. 29, 1969, Volume XVII, No. 1-24. Stone shifted to a biweekly schedule at the beginning of 1968 but continued with the name Weekly. Issues are 4 pages with the exception of one 8 page issue. Generally in Very Good condition, with each issue stamped with the address of the original subscriber and each issue previous twice folded for mailing.
