An eighteenth impression of the true first edition, with the number-string sequence 20 19 18 at the bottom of the printer's page. Only "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is listed as 'also available', indicating a 1998 printing date, and with 'Winner of the 1997 Smarties Gold award at the bottom of the front board. ***The eighteenth impression of the hardcover issue is significant as it was the first to feature the revised old wizard illustration on the back cover. Illustrator Thomas Taylor has explained that he had been given little information when designing the original cover for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". When instructed to create an image of a wizard for the back cover, he used his father as a reference. He was not informed that the illustration was meant to represent Hogwarts' headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. This resulted in an image that did not accurately depict the character. The new illustration by Thomas Taylor with Dumbledore on the back cover was used starting from the 18th hardcover and 40th paperback printing. ***Near fine in pictorial colour illustrated boards. The boards are clean and unmarked without any fading at all, even to the spine. Head and tail of spine uncreased. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges very slightly foxed, mainly at the top edge. The colours of the book are extremely bright and unfaded. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, marks or annotations. Pages clean and bright - just lightly tanned as usual. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £10.99 on the front flap. The head and tail of the spine and extremities of the dustwrapper are just very slightly rubbed. No creases, chips or tears. The colours to the spine of the dustwrapper are just gently faded, slightly affecting the back panel near the spine (please see scans). ***223 pages. 206mm x 136mm. ***An early eighteenth impression of the true first edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", in very nice bright collectable condition. Being such a popular children's book, copies in nice undamaged condition are far from easy to find now. Numberline runs 10 to 3 (The first Canadian printing was issued with a numberline starting at 2 hence this is the 2nd printing with the numberline to 3).
