From the Glossary:
Pulp magazines: Magazines published primarily in the 20th Century named for the cheaply produced wood pulp paper on which they were printed. The quality of the materials used in production was in keeping with the stories printed in the magazines. Cheap and accessible, but not intended to last very long. These magazines became popular diversions for readers, offering hard working writers a steady income, and thus introducing the world to many significant writers, especially in the genres of mystery and science fiction.
