A smart edition of W.J.J. Spry's illustrated discussion of the voyages of HMS Challenger. The HMS Challenger was a Royal Navy Pearl-class corvette, and was the flagship of the Australia Station between 1866 and 1870. She was picked to undertake the first global marine research expedition: the Challenger expedition, carrying 243 officers, scientists and sailors. The seventh edition of this work, illustrated with a frontispiece, a folding route map, and numerous vignette illustrations. In a full calf prize binding, with the bookplate of Christ's Hospital, London, to the front pastedown, awarding this volume to J.H. Palmer in 1879. In a full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing. Fading to back strip, with rubbing to back strip head and tail. Front hinge strained but firmly held. Prize bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, but with areas of significant spotting to first and last few leaves. Very Good.
