HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE (1/18 - near fine, no dustwrapper - the first hardcover impression to have the old wizard illustration on the back board)
An eighteenth impression of the true first edition, with the number-string sequence 20 19 18 at the bottom of the printer's page. Only "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is listed as 'also available', indicating a 1998 printing date, and with 'Winner of the 1997 Smarties Gold award at the bottom of the front board. ***The eighteenth impression of the hardcover issue is significant as it was the first to feature the revised old wizard illustration on the back cover. Illustrator Thomas Taylor has explained that he had been given little information when designing the original cover for "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone". When instructed to create an image of a wizard for the back cover, he used his father as a reference. He was not informed that the illustration was meant to represent Hogwarts' headmaster, Albus Dumbledore. This resulted in an image that did not accurately depict the character. The new illustration by Thomas Taylor with Dumbledore on the back cover was used starting from the 18th hardcover and 40th paperback printing. ***Near fine in pictorial colour illustrated boards. The boards are clean and unmarked without any fading at all, even to the spine. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Very slight reading lean. Spine tight. The colours of the book are extremely bright and unfaded. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions, marks or annotations. Pages clean and bright - just lightly tanned as usual. There is a small nick at the top edge of p.87/8 (please see scans). No significant creases or tears. This copy does not retain the dustwrapper. ***223 pages. 206mm x 136mm. ***An early eighteenth impression of the true first edition of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone", in very nice bright condition, albeit without the dustwrapper. Being such a popular children's book, copies in nice undamaged condition are far from easy to find now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
