Also, the text on the lower dj flap tells of J. K. Rowling's hard times and prizes. Scholastic used the artwork of a single illustrator across the series: Mary Grandpre. We believe this to be a book club edition with the following points of issue: a full number line is followed by "8 9/9 0/0 01 02." "Printed in the U.S.A. 23" and then "First American edition, October 1998" appear below the number line. Boards are black (not embossed with the diamond pattern) with a maroon spine. Dust jacket is priced at $17.95. The bar code section on the jacket is cream with nothing printed above the smaller bar code. The dust jacket also features a Publishers Weekly review on the back cover. The lettering is not embossed and is a dull brown color on both the front cover and the spine. The spine of both the book and the dust jacket lack a "Year 1" badge. The jacket has the author's name as just "Rowling" though the book has "J.K." above "Rowling." This particular copy is in beautiful condition and is exceptionally clean with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Not an ex-library copy. The spine is tight and crisp, and the corners are square. Boards are clean, flat and true with no evidence of wear. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows minimal edge wear but does have some bumping to the upper spine and some creasing along the top and bottom edges on the back cover. A great-looking, affordable alternative to a true first! This highly collectible, fine/near fine, book club copy is protected with an archival mylar dust jacket cover. Satisfaction guaranteed!

A beautiful early printing (Fifth) with number line ""5 7 9 10 8 6 8 9/9 0/0 01 02"", no series number to top of spine, 51695 on rear panel above barcode, Publishers Weekly review to rear panel, raised type to Harry Potter on the title, and purple boards with red spine cloth with gilt. Sharp corners, clean interior and tight binding, just some small spots of separation in gutter at title page that obviously occured at printer/bindery. Unclipped jacket($16.95) in beautiful shape.

Some slight shelf wear to cover along bottom edge otherwise appears as new. Great jacket condition with $16.95 price has some slight wear at corners. First American edition, October 1998" )/ First Edition (stated) of Book One of J.K. Rowling's now classic Harry Potter series. This copy has all the points of the TRUE FIRST US EDITION. Book is bound with red cloth spine with gold lettering and has the diamond pattern purple paper over boards. There is no volume number on the spine. The book has green end papers. The second Issue dust jacket has the original $16.95 price and there is no volume number on the jacket's spine (later printings stated the book number) . The blurb on the back cover of the dust jacket is from Pubisher's Weekly (the first issue had The Guardian review). The back cover of the DJ has 2 bar codes at the bottom, with the numbers 51695 above the smaller one. The "Harry Potter" in gold lettering on the front panel of the jacket is raised and there is no date on the title page. Child's marking with green marker on rear endpapers. Finger smudge at top right corner of page 113 which carries to foredge. Small area of discoloration at very bottom of spine cloth. Dust jacket protected with clear plastic cover.
