Front and back cover sound but rather heavily worn around edges. Marbled endpapers preserved. Contents sound with chipping along fore-edge on some leaves and mostly minor foxing. Lacks a final unnumbered leaf containing an order to print. Translated from the original French edition of 1648 which was titled "Discours politiques des roys."

Bound in full leather boards with raised bands present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Translated from the original French edition of 1648 which was titled "Discours politiques des roys." . Folio, full mottled leather binding with raised bands, leather and gilt title spine label, all edges marbled, engraved title page (with 'Grosvenor' in ink) engraved plates (11 portrait plates), pp (xx), 190. Armorial bookplate (Richard Grosvenor of Eatonin Com-Cheshire Bart.) and private library plate (case XIX, no.11) front endpaper. Marked from water to bottom edge of pages, particularly in early pages. Very good condition. The personalities, philosophies and actions of world leaders, translated from the original French.

First edition in English, following publication in French in 1647. The author presents the history and achievements of several leaders including French, English, Spanish, and Swedish monarchs, alongside Tamerlane, Mehmed II, and Suleiman II. This copy is the first issue, with the dedication leaf "to true honor and renown", afterwards cancelled following the Restoration in 1660 with a dedication to King Charles. ESTC R17187; Wing S2141. Folio (276 x 170 mm). Contemporary calf, early red morocco label, new endpapers to style. Engraved title page, 11 portraits. Complete with imprimatur leaf. Slight wear at extremities, minor superficial splits to joints, slight staining at head of title page and plates. A very good copy.
