That in 2005 Smith was awarded the Commandeur des Art et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture, and won the National Book Award in 2010 is a curious sequence of recognition: Often America's notable cultural icons are revered by institutions abroad before domestic tributes are bestowed. Dust jacket is now preserved in a clear, removable archival sleeve.
