First edition, first printing Seminal book from the Vietnam War era and one of the best. Fine in gilt lettering dark boards with like shiny like dust jacket. There is just the hint of toning to the fore edge. A lovely copy all around.
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1990. First Edition. A Near-fine copy in quarter-backed black cloth and black boards with gilt lettering and a small scuff mark on the front free endpaper, else fine, in a fine, illustrated dustwrapper. A collection of related stories about a platoon of American soldiers in the Vietnam War, evidently based on O'Brien's own experiences although the title page refers to the book as "a work of fiction." The Things They Carried was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and won the French Prix du Meilleur Livre Etranger. It is widely regarded as one of the most significant work of fiction to come out of the Vietnam War. One of the stories, "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong" was made into a film in 1998, starring Kiefer Sutherland, named "A Soldier's Sweetheart."
National Book Award winner O'Brien's fifth book is considered by many to be the best work written on the Vietnam War as well as a superb technical achievement spanning and combining three literary forms -- the short story, the novel and the memoir; top edge of text very slightly soiled, o/w boards and text are clean, tight, square; first issue dustjacket (title on spine off center, no DJ design credit on flap) shows only very slight edgewear and rubbing. A Collectable Copy.
First edition. A fine book in a near fine dust jacket. Light sunning to the jacket spine. One of the enduring works on the Vietnam War. A collection of linked short stories about a platoon of American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. Based on O'Brien's experiences as a soldier in the 23rd Infantry Division.

Dust jacket is generally attributed as a second state for its front panel and spine lettering are aligned correctly to their respective location, i.e. not mis-rolled or overlapped. Black cloth spine with vibrant gilt stamping; black boards. Negligibly small dark stain to text block's top edge fractionally affecting a few leaves at margins; touch of faint soiling to fore-edge. Past owner's inelegant ink stamp "This book belongs to" with ink handwritten name, city, and date at front free endpaper center; title page's bottom margin has green ink stamp of three trees presumably being another embellishment by past owner. Author's three-line ink inscription "To David, | Best wishes | Tim O'Brien" at center of title page with slight surface abrasion along the first line; interior pages are otherwise bright and clean.
