    Description
"An anthology of American poetry about nature and the environment, divided into a historical section with poetry written from roughly the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century and a contemporary section with over 300 poems written since 1960 by a diverse group of more than 170 poets. Introduction by Robert Hass"--Provided by publisher.; "As the critic R. P. Blackmur said, poetry "adds to the stock of available reality." In The Ecopoetry Anthology, editors Ann Fisher-Wirth and Laura-Gray Street present hundreds of poems that add to our reality about the natural world, its beauties and its degradations. This groundbreaking collection has the capacity to transform people's lives aesthetically and politically. Poetry's eloquent and ineffable power can work to enhance our understanding of the world beyond the human and lead us to act with more respect, humility, and stewardship toward the environment. The poets collected here, of wide-ranging talents, backgrounds, and beliefs, speak in many voices to reinforce the most critical story of our time: that we must love and care for the planet and appreciate the integrated biological beauty that sustains us, or lose the only world we've got." -- Publisher's description; From Song of Myself / Walt Whitman -- Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking / Walt Whitman -- Crossing Brooklyn Ferry / Walt Whitman -- #116/328 / Emily Dickinson -- #126/348 / Emily Dickinson -- #184/465 / Emily Dickinson -- #209/520 / Emily Dickinson -- #498/1400 / Emily Dickinson -- #537/1593 / Emily Dickinson -- An Old Man's Winter Night / Robert Frost -- The Need of Being Versed in Country Things / Robert Frost -- Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening / Robert Frost -- Spring Pools / Robert Frost -- Design / Robert Frost -- The Most of It / Robert Frost -- Directive / Robert Frost -- Sunday Morning / Wallace Stevens -- Anecdote of the Jar / Wallace Stevens -- The Snow Man / Wallace Stevens -- The River of Rivers in Connecticut / Wallace Stevens -- Spring and All / William Carlos Williams -- The Sea-Elephant / William Carlos Williams -- Between Walls / William Carlos Williams -- Raleigh Was Right / William Carlos Williams -- The High Bridge above the Tagus River at Toledo / William Carlos Williams -- The Tree / Ezra Pound -- Salutation / Ezra Pound -- Ancient Music / Ezra Pound -- from Canto LXXXI / Ezra Pound -- Oread / H.D. -- Sea Iris / H.D. -- The Pool / H.D. -- Shine, Perishing Republic / Robinson Jeffers -- Hurt Hawks / Robinson Jeffers -- The Purse-Seine / Robinson Jeffers -- Carmel Point / Robinson Jeffers -- The Deer Lay Down Their Bones / Robinson Jeffers -- The Fish / Marianne Moore -- A Grave / Marianne Moore -- The Paper Nautilus / Marianne Moore -- from The Waste Land / T.S. Description
First edition.; Includes index.; This anthology of contemporary American poetry focuses on the new poem, the hybrid, a synthesis of traditional and experimental styles. As one of the editors argues in the introduction to this anthology, the long-acknowledged "fundamental division" between experimental and traditional is disappearing in American poetry in favor of hybrid approaches that blend trends from accessible lyricism to linguistic exploration. The focus of this work is on the blend; the more than seventy poets featured here, including Jorie Graham, Albert Goldbarth, and Lyn Hejinian, have found new and often unique ways to reconfigure the innumerable and sometimes conflicting voices of the past thirty years. The editors have crafted short introductory essays on each of the poets in the anthology, providing biographical backgrounds and positioning them within the current of contemporary poetry. This anthology is essential reading for those who care about the present moment and the future, of American verse.; from The Indian never had a horse ; from In/somnia ; from To be in a time of war / Etel Adnan -- Inside a world the world fits into ; You think it's a secret, but it never was one ; Exceptions and melancholies ; Soft and pretty ; Sampling ; Sometimes an image ; The unveiling ; Vertigo / Ralph Angel -- Special theory of relativity ; Generation ; The fit ; Police business ; Turn of events ; What we mean ; Scumble ; Yonder ; Translation / Rae Armantrout -- Well-lit places ; What to do with milk ; The taken ; Obsidian House ; Others shied away ; Haibun ; The garden of false civility ; Of linnets and dull time / John Ashbery -- February elegy ; P equals pie ; Mystery at manor ; Close ; Alice in Wonderland ; Man and woman / Mary Jo Bang -- Now begins our immaculate summer ; The birds know ; In the days of famous want ; This is what's been done to flesh ; from Your time has come / Joshua Beckman -- Insatiability ; Clouds of willing seen in the bird day ; The white letter ; The green letter ; Banana peaks get snowfall / Cal Bedient -- Conservation with Evan Hesse ; Sail ; Justnowland ; Vanish nearby ; Shoots and pulps ; Pirate keep / Molly Bendall -- Chinese space ; from Four year old girl ; Parallel lines / Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge -- A sideways suicide ; Ruby for grief ; My sister is not a dollar ; The eyeglasses ; We have to talk about another book ; The rearranger / Michael Burkard -- Before the birds awaken ; It's what I'm afraid of ; My whispered song ; I'm sorry I brought it up ; There is no way to know ; The words I did not say ; There should've been rabbits ; She falls in love ; The note I taped up ; You have put the cup ; In the story ; Through a panel of controls ; When you step from the entry hall ; I have no say / Killarney Clary -- Floating by ; Units for tomorrow ; Dear Robert ; Sarabande ; My operatives ; Conditions maritimes / Norma Cole -- The sky drank in ; Careful ; Little more red sun on the human ; from The plot genie / Gillian Conoley -- Works of Thos. Description
"A commemorative collection of evocative wartime hits. Includes broadcast announcements by Winston Churchill and President Harry S. Truman"--Insert cover.; Compact discs.; Program notes inserted in container.; The 8th May 2020 marks the 75th Anniversary of VE Day – Victory In Europe Day – when the Allied forces formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany, signalling the end of the war in Europe. It was an emotional and momentous day for the populations of all the countries which had committed their armed forces, often young men who had been conscripted from their civilian life to risk their lives in the cause of what was rightly seen as a crucial fight for freedom and a new world order. One of things which helped those forces, and their loved ones at home, was the popular music of the time, ranging from rousing patriotic songs to sentimental ballads of longing, which articulated the agony of separation and potential loss. This 50-track 2-CD set brings together hit recordings from the USA and UK which were part of that soundtrack to the war effort, and most of which were big chart hits in the USA (the UK did not yet have a records sales chart). From emotional classics like Vera Lynn’s “We’ll Meet Again” and “White Cliffs Of Dover” through the swing hits of Glen Miller which kept people dancing through the dark times, to the songs of longing and the rousing exhortations of patriotic anthems, it captures the unique spirit of the times. It closes with the announcements of the victory by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Harry S. Truman. Even for those who were not around at the time it’s an evocative souvenir to commemorate a key moment in modern history.; Disc 1: We'll Meet Again / Vera Lynn -- Moonlight Serenade / Glenn Miller Orchestra -- Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye / Gracie Fields -- God Bless America / Kate Smith -- I'll Be With You In Apple Blossom Time / Andrews Sisters with Vic Schoen & His Orch -- Til Reveille / Kay Kyser & His Orchestra with Harry, Ginny, Jack & Max -- Remember Pearl Harbor / Sammy Kaye -- Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy / The Andrews Sisters -- A String Of Pearls / Glenn Miller & His Orchestra -- The White Cliffs Of Dover / Vera Lynn -- I Don't Want To Walk Without You / Harry James & His Orchestra -- Somebody Else Is Taking My Place / Benny Goodman & His Orchestra with Peggy Lee -- We'll Be Singing Hallelujah (Marching Through Berlin) / Ethel Merman -- Johnny Doughboy Found A Rose In Ireland / Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians -- Just As Though You Were Here / Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra with Frank Sinatra & The Pied Pipers -- Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree (With Anyone Else But Me) / Glenn Miller & His Orchestra -- He Wears A Pair Of Silver Wings / Kay Kyser & His Orchestra -- One Dozen Roses / Harry James & His Orchestra with Jimmy Saunders -- This Is Worth Fighting For / Jimmy Dorsey Orch.
